How to import a MetaMask wallet into Rabby
There is no automatic MetaMask-to-Rabby transfer. You import the same Secret Recovery Phrase (or a private key) into Rabby yourself, and the same addresses and funds appear because they live on the blockchain. Do it only inside the Rabby extension, never on a website.
Quick steps
- Install the real Rabby. Install Rabby from the link on rabby.io and confirm the extension ID acmacodkjbdgmoleebolmdjonilkdbch.
- Get your MetaMask phrase. Use your paper backup, or reveal the Secret Recovery Phrase in MetaMask's security settings privately and write it down.
- Import the seed phrase. In Rabby, choose the option for an existing address, select seed phrase import, enter the words and set a password if asked.
- Select the same addresses. Tick the addresses you used in MetaMask from the list Rabby shows. Import any private-key accounts separately.
- Check balances. Compare addresses with MetaMask and confirm balances appear. Add custom networks for chains Rabby does not list.
- Choose the default wallet. Use Rabby's Flip setting to choose which wallet pages see, or remove MetaMask once you are satisfied.
Your funds are not stored in MetaMask. They sit on the blockchain at your addresses, and the wallet only holds the keys. Importing the same keys into Rabby gives you the same addresses, balances, NFTs and open approvals. Nothing is sent and no gas is spent. Rabby itself has said that you "simply import the seed phrase in Rabby" to switch (Rabby on X, 2023).
First, a warning about migration scams
Scammers run pages that offer to "sync", "migrate" or "validate" your MetaMask wallet with Rabby. They ask you to type your recovery phrase into a form. That is always theft. The only place you type your phrase is the import screen of a genuine Rabby extension you installed from rabby.io. Check it with our extension verifier first.
Some versions of Rabby show a MetaMask option on the import screen. A September 2026 review found that it only shows instructions rather than copying anything (Bytwork, 2026). Either way, the import itself is done with your phrase or key.
What moves and what does not
| Item | Moves with the seed phrase? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Accounts created in MetaMask from the phrase | Yes | Select the same addresses in Rabby's address list. |
| Accounts imported into MetaMask by private key | No | Import each private key separately. |
| Hardware wallet accounts | No phrase needed | Connect the device to Rabby directly. |
| Tokens, NFTs, DeFi positions | Yes | They are on-chain at your address. |
| Token approvals you granted | Yes | They stay active until revoked. |
| Custom networks, contacts, custom tokens | No | Re-add networks in Rabby if needed. |
| Bitcoin, Solana or other non-EVM accounts | No | Rabby is EVM-only. |
Step 1: find your MetaMask Secret Recovery Phrase
Ideally you already have it written on paper from when you created MetaMask. If not, MetaMask lets you reveal it from its security settings after entering your MetaMask password. Do this privately and write it on paper. Do not copy it to the clipboard, a screenshot or a chat.
If some MetaMask accounts were imported with private keys, export those keys from each account's details in MetaMask the same way.
Step 2: import into Rabby
Open Rabby. On a fresh install, choose the option for an address you already have. In an existing Rabby, open the address list and add a new address. Choose to import a seed phrase, type the words in order and confirm. If this is the first wallet in Rabby, it asks you to set a password.
Rabby then lists the addresses derived from the phrase. Tick the ones you used in MetaMask, usually the first few. If an address seems to be missing, look further down the list. MetaMask uses the standard Ethereum derivation path, so the addresses should match in order.
For a private-key account, choose the private key import option instead and paste the key.
Seed phrase or private key?
Use the seed phrase when you can. One phrase brings back every account MetaMask created from it, and you can add more addresses later. A private key restores only one address, so you would need one import per account. Private keys are also easier to leak, because people tend to copy them around as text. Whichever you use, type it only into the import screen and clear your clipboard afterwards if you pasted it.
If you want a clean break from an old phrase, there is a second route: create a brand-new wallet in Rabby, then send your assets from MetaMask to the new address. That costs gas on each chain and you must also move NFTs and close DeFi positions, but it leaves old approvals behind on the old address.
Step 3: check the result
Compare the first and last characters of each address in Rabby with MetaMask. Balances should appear across chains within a short time. Assets on networks Rabby does not list will not show until you add a custom network.
Step 4: decide whether to keep MetaMask
You can keep both extensions. Both inject the standard Ethereum provider into pages, and Rabby's README notes that clicking a "MetaMask" button with Rabby installed will usually open Rabby (Rabby GitHub README). Rabby's source code has two related controls (Rabby source code, October 2026):
- Flip sets whether Rabby or MetaMask is the wallet that pages see, with a list of dapps where MetaMask is preferred.
- MetaMask Mode, added in January 2025, lets Rabby connect on dapps that only show a MetaMask button by presenting itself as MetaMask.
Menu positions change between versions, so look in Rabby's settings or more menu for these options.
If dapps keep opening the wrong wallet, see Rabby not showing in a dapp. Once you are happy, you can remove MetaMask. Your phrase still controls the same addresses everywhere.
After the move
- Review old approvals. Approvals you gave through MetaMask still apply. Use Rabby's approvals list to remove ones you no longer need; see revoke approvals.
- Keep non-EVM assets where they are. If you held Bitcoin or Solana in MetaMask, those need a wallet that supports them. See Rabby vs MetaMask.
- Consider a fresh phrase. If you ever typed your phrase into a website or doubt it is private, do not import it. Create a new Rabby wallet and move funds to it instead.
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose my funds if I uninstall MetaMask?
No, as long as you have the seed phrase. Funds live on the blockchain. Uninstalling a wallet only removes the keys from that browser.
Does importing to Rabby cost gas?
No. Importing keys is local. No transaction is sent.
Can I use MetaMask and Rabby at the same time?
Yes. Both can stay installed. Rabby has a setting that decides whether Rabby or MetaMask responds when a dapp asks for a wallet.
Why is one of my MetaMask accounts missing in Rabby?
It was probably imported into MetaMask with a private key, or it sits further down the address list. Import the private key separately or scroll the list of derived addresses.
Will my Bitcoin or Solana from MetaMask show in Rabby?
No. Rabby supports EVM chains only, so non-EVM accounts stay in MetaMask or another wallet that supports those chains.
Is there a website that migrates MetaMask to Rabby?
No legitimate one. Any site that asks for your recovery phrase to migrate or sync wallets is a scam.
