Rabby vs MetaMask: which wallet should you use in 2026?
Rabby is the better fit if you live on Ethereum and other EVM chains and trade often: its in-wallet swap fee is 0.25% against MetaMask's 0.875%, and it simulates every transaction by default. MetaMask is the better fit if you also want native Bitcoin, Solana or Tron accounts, a Firefox extension or the widest dapp support. Many people install both.
Rabby and MetaMask are both free, self-custodial wallets: you hold the seed phrase, and neither company can move your funds. They look alike on the surface, and Rabby can import a MetaMask wallet in a few minutes. The differences are in fees, chain coverage and how much each wallet explains before you sign. All facts below were checked on 25 October 2026.

Both wallets are copied by scammers constantly. Rabby never asks for your seed phrase, and neither company's support staff will message you first.
Fees: 0.25% vs 0.875%
Sending tokens and using dapps costs only the network's gas fee in both wallets. The difference is the fee each wallet adds to its built-in swaps.
- Rabby charges 0.25%, included in the quote. Its own code (October 2026) sets 0% for stablecoin-to-stablecoin swaps, wrapping or unwrapping ETH and swaps between a native token and liquid staking tokens, 0.12% for a single trade between $100,000 and $1 million and 0% above $1 million. Rabby's bridge feature also charges 0.25%.
- MetaMask lists a 0.875% fee on swaps in its support centre, alongside the quote rate and network fee.
| Swap size | Rabby fee (0.25%) | MetaMask fee (0.875%) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| $500 | $1.25 | $4.38 | $3.13 |
| $1,000 | $2.50 | $8.75 | $6.25 |
| $10,000 | $25.00 | $87.50 | $62.50 |
Two caveats. First, the wallet fee is only one part of the cost: the route, slippage and gas often matter more, so compare the amount you will actually receive. Second, you do not have to use either wallet's swap at all. Connecting to a DEX directly avoids the wallet fee in both. Our Rabby swap fees guide and gas and swap cost estimator go into detail.
Rabby also has a Gas Account: a prepaid balance, topped up with USDC or USDT, that pays gas on supported chains so you do not need ETH on every network. MetaMask has run its own gas promotions, such as covering gas on some larger Solana swaps (July 2026 reports).
Chains: EVM depth vs multichain breadth
This is the clearest dividing line. Rabby is EVM-only. It integrates dozens of EVM networks (more than 90 according to 2025 reports; the count changes often), and you can add any other EVM chain as a custom network. It cannot hold native Bitcoin, Solana or Tron. See Rabby supported chains.
MetaMask has moved beyond EVM: it added native Solana in May 2025 (The Block), Bitcoin in December 2025 and Tron on 15 January 2026 (Decrypt). Its swap feature lists 19 networks, including Bitcoin, Solana and Tron (MetaMask support, October 2026). If you want one app for an ETH and a SOL or BTC balance, MetaMask can do it and Rabby cannot.
Rabby's advantage on EVM is convenience. It switches network automatically to match the dapp you are on, so you rarely hit "wrong network" errors, and it shows your balances across all chains in one view using DeBank data.
Safety: simulation, warnings and track record
Rabby has been built around pre-sign checks since its 2021 launch, when human-readable signing was a headline feature. Before you sign, it shows what will leave and enter your wallet, decodes permits and approvals into plain language and runs a rule-based security engine that checks the site, the recipient and the spender. You can view each rule. See how Rabby's transaction simulation works.
MetaMask has closed much of this gap. It now shows estimated balance changes and security alerts by default. CryptoSlate notes (September 2026) that MetaMask sends EVM requests to its own servers for this analysis. In both wallets, warnings can be overridden, so they help only if you read them.
On track record, Rabby's one serious incident was the October 2022 exploit of its Swap router contract, about a month after Swap launched: roughly 114 ETH and 179 BNB were taken from users who had approved the contract (The Block; web3isgoinggreat). Private keys were not affected, and Rabby told users to revoke approvals. In August 2026 Rabby fixed a bug that could let a connected malicious site obtain a signature silently, but only with auto-lock set to 10 minutes; no exploitation is known. Rabby publishes audits by SlowMist and Least Authority, most recently in August and October 2026. Full details are in Rabby's security history.
MetaMask's best-known flaw was the 2022 "Demonic" issue, where recovery material could be left on disk on some setups; MetaMask identified mitigations in version 10.11.3 (CryptoSlate). We found no exploit of the MetaMask wallet software itself that drained users.
The bigger risk for both is fakes. Rabby has no official Firefox add-on, and fake "Rabby" add-ons appeared there repeatedly in 2025 and 2026. Always type rabby.io yourself and check the extension ID with our Rabby extension checker.
Features and everyday use
- Hardware wallets: both support Ledger, Trezor, Lattice, Keystone and OneKey on desktop. Rabby adds BitBox02; MetaMask adds Arculus, D'Cent and Keycard Shell. On mobile, Rabby supports Ledger, Trezor, Keystone and OneKey; MetaMask supports Ledger, Keystone and NGRAVE ZERO. See Rabby hardware wallets.
- Desktop app: neither currently offers one. Rabby shut down the backend of its old macOS and Windows desktop app on 31 December 2025 (Rabby announcement, December 2025), so that app no longer works; Rabby said a new version is planned, and we could not confirm one is available as of 25 October 2026.
- Browsers: MetaMask works in Firefox; Rabby does not officially.
- Approvals: Rabby has a built-in page to review and revoke approvals, including Permit2 and EIP-7702 delegations. See how to revoke approvals.
- Trading extras: both offer perpetual futures through Hyperliquid (Rabby Perps from September 2025, MetaMask from October 2025). Rabby added prediction markets in 2026; MetaMask announced a Polymarket partnership in October 2025.
- Extensibility: MetaMask Snaps let third parties add features; Rabby has no equivalent.
- Rewards and tokens: MetaMask runs a seasonal Rewards points programme and has said a MASK token is planned; we found no launch as of 25 October 2026. Rabby has had points since January 2024 but no token. Any "Rabby token claim" site is a scam; see Rabby points and airdrop.
Using both, or switching
You do not have to choose. Rabby has a toggle that decides whether Rabby or MetaMask answers dapps, and a mode that lets Rabby connect when a site only shows a MetaMask button. To move over fully, import your MetaMask seed phrase into Rabby; your addresses and funds stay the same because they live on-chain. Our MetaMask to Rabby guide walks through it, and Rabby not showing in a dapp fixes the common clash.
Choose Rabby if… / Choose MetaMask if…
Choose Rabby if
- You use DeFi on many EVM chains and want automatic network switching.
- You swap often and want a 0.25% fee, or 0% on stablecoin swaps.
- You want a clear preview and risk check before every signature.
- You use a BitBox02 hardware wallet.
Choose MetaMask if
- You want Bitcoin, Solana or Tron in the same wallet as your EVM assets.
- You use Firefox.
- You rely on Snaps or need the wallet that every dapp tests first.
- You want MetaMask's card or its Rewards programme.
Neither is the right answer for everyone. For a full picture of Rabby on its own, read our Rabby Wallet review.
Frequently asked questions
Is Rabby cheaper than MetaMask?
For in-wallet swaps, yes: Rabby charges 0.25% and MetaMask 0.875% as of October 2026. Rabby charges nothing on stablecoin-to-stablecoin swaps. Network gas is the same in both, and sending tokens has no wallet fee in either.
Is Rabby safer than MetaMask?
Both are self-custodial and both now preview transactions before you sign. Rabby's checks are more detailed and have been its focus from the start. In practice, most losses in either wallet come from fake apps, phishing and malicious approvals, not from the wallet software.
Can I use Rabby and MetaMask at the same time?
Yes. Rabby has a toggle that decides which wallet responds to dapps, so you can keep both installed and switch when needed.
Can Rabby hold Bitcoin or Solana like MetaMask?
No. Rabby supports only Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains. MetaMask added native Solana, Bitcoin and Tron in 2025 and January 2026.
Will my MetaMask address change if I move to Rabby?
No. Importing the same seed phrase gives the same addresses and the same balances. Only import it into the real Rabby, downloaded from rabby.io, and never type it into a website.
